Why own a classic or custom automobile? Classic cars hold their value while a new car's value begins to decrease the minute you drive it off the lot. At the same time you pay extra for tags and insurance on new cars. In a short five years a new car on the average decreases in value to less than one fourth of its original sales price. On the other hand, classic cars, that were beautifully designed and engineered, are milestones in automotive history and only increase in value. They were very popular when introduced and remain so today.
The first thing you need to consider before restoring a classic or custom car is whether or not it is worth restoring. Some cars have too much rust damage to be worth restoring as rust repair is probably the most expensive repair you may encounter. You should also consider the overall condition of the car and the availability of replacement parts before you start. We will be glad to help you select the correct car for you and the degree of restoration that will fit your budget.
If you decide to restore a classic yourself, be sure that as you remove parts you label each piece, including nuts and bolts. If possible, disassemble the car one section at a time, and reassemble that section before starting a new section. If the car will be shown, each part should be stripped and/or cleaned before repainting. This allows for finding defective or worn parts. Rust repair is of primary importance if the car is going to last. This is an area that must be correct in all respects, or all other efforts are wasted. Mechanical repairs such as engine, transmission, brakes, rear-end, u-joints, front end, and wiring should be completed before it is reassembled. All parts that are removed from the car should be put back on the car before painting so that alignment can be checked. All parts, such as doors, deck lid, etc., should be then painted or edged in and after being put back on the car alignment should then be checked again. After painting, all glass, weather stripping, window channels, regulators, power window motors, windshield seals and trim pieces may be reassembled. If the car is to be shown, details will determine whether a car will ever win a trophy or turn heads. A fully restored car should last as long as any new car on the market today, and very likely, much longer.
As you can see, the restoration of a classic car is a very complicated and time consuming endeavor. If you do not have the skills or the time to restore your car yourself we can help with some or all of the restoration.
